In my previous posts I rated myself at a seven because of the lack of my communication skills. This term in COMM104, through my participation in the various class activities I was able to expand on my knowledge of the constructive methods of communication.
The speech forum, which was my first by the way, taught me the methods of writing and delivering a speech and this went hand in hand with the group presentation activities in learning how to put together a presentation.
These activities taught me the benefits of working together with others and will be a great benefit to me in my job and in other activities.
For this reason I choose to give myself a nine.

I took a week off of work to spend with my family who is visiting from the US right now. It was a time well spent and we were able to do a lot of catching up.
Now I'm back to work while they are in Tobago for the week and I am sitting by my desk wondering why I'm not there with them, because after such a wonderful week I now feel so stressed.

Slang is the poetry of everyday life.
I may find myself using slang, if not on a daily basis but yes on a regular basis because one may find oneself using words or phrases that is familiar with that hearer's group at the time.
There are the forums in which it is unacceptable to use slang, for example in business and formal settings it would be inappropriate.

Being an effective verbal communicator
I believe that I am learning to be an effective verbal communicator. I know part of the process is being a good listener because to meet the needs of the audience you must listen.
As to clarity in speech and linguistic sensitivity I would say that as I go along I am learning both so I would call it a work in progress.

As I look through the weekend papers I see it filled with carnival activities which culminates with Monday and Tuesday Mas. What comes to mind is that despite the hardships which may occupy our daily lives, we are still able to put aside our troubles for a few weeks.
Whether it is to participate in the carnival activities, or to go to camp, or just stay at home, time can be had to kick back and relax in which ever form suits us before returning to our daily lives.
We truly are a blessed country.

My group presented on India. From this presentation I gathered that Indian cultural history spans 4,500 years, it is known for its religious diversity, there is a strict social hierarchy, and its verbal and nonverbal communication is specific and also steeped in tradition.

In-class presentations on culture
The presentations in class taught me that each culture is unique, that people are defined by their culture in their characteristics, in the way they dress, for instance the Italian's sense of style, what foods are favored and what traditions they hold dear.
