Entry 10

Slang is the poetry of everyday life.

I may find myself using slang, if not on a daily basis but yes on a regular basis because one may find oneself using words or phrases that is familiar with that hearer's group at the time.
There are the forums in which it is unacceptable to use slang, for example in business and formal settings it would be inappropriate.

Entry 9

Being an effective  verbal communicator

I believe that I am learning to be an effective verbal communicator. I know part of the process is being a good listener because to meet the needs of the audience you must listen.
As to clarity in speech and linguistic sensitivity I would say that as I go along I am learning both so I would call it a work in progress.

As I look through the weekend papers I see it filled with carnival activities which culminates with Monday and Tuesday Mas. What comes to mind is that despite the hardships which may occupy our daily lives, we are still able to put aside our troubles for a few weeks.

Whether it is to participate in the carnival activities, or to go to camp, or just stay at home, time can be had to kick back and relax in which ever form suits us before returning to our daily lives.
We truly are a blessed country.

Entry 7

My group presented on India. From this presentation I gathered that Indian cultural history spans 4,500 years, it is known for its religious diversity, there is a strict social hierarchy, and its verbal and nonverbal communication is specific and also steeped in tradition.

In-class presentations on culture

The presentations in class taught me that each culture is unique, that people are defined by their culture in their characteristics, in the way they dress, for instance the Italian's sense of style, what foods are favored and what traditions they hold dear.

Entry 5

Because Trinidad and Tobago is comprised of a variety of races and a mixture of cultures I find it easy to communicate with the majority having grown up around them. We enjoy a freedom of expression that may not be otherwise found in othe cultures.

Cow used to murder teen!

This was the front page news that greeted the nation this morning. After reading the article in which a young boy was tied to a tree and to his uncle's cow and killed, I was left to wonder just  how low can man sink to again and how inhumane we are becoming. The values we hold dear seem no longer to be present especiallyin the value of human life.

This article has shown how merciless some persons are becoming and it makes me personally scared to know that it is these same people we may have to interact with probably on a dailybasis.

Entry 3

My Perception of myself

I see myself as an original. I don't lead the pack, nor do I follow. Instead I would like to think that I follow my own path in life. I spent alot of my life not quite a loner but more of an observer. I believe in family and generally prefer the simple things in life. Yet there is still the part of me that still wishes to push that little bit further just to see what happens. I believe in true friendships.
I see myself as goal oriented. I believe in myself and in what I can accomplish.

Entry 2

Ten years ago I had an accident where I was caught in a fire. The recovery period was traumatic for me and I can safely say it was the hardest thing I have had to experience. During this time the changes I have had to make in my life to adapt to a new me caused me to change my point of view on how I approached life.
It has taught me to appreciate that which I took for granted before,  to reassess my values and to discover my inner strengths.
Do I think differently after this event? I most certainly do. I believe it has made me a stronger  person, able to face challenges without fear.

Entry 1

Hello. My name is Alicia Anderson-Alexander. My Major is English.
About myself: I work in the library service. My favorite things are spending time with my family and my hobbie is reading. As an effective communicator  I would rate myself a seven and one of the ways I can probably  improve my areas of weakness in communication is by networking.
